OUTLOOK & HARDWARE
We would like to begin our review by saying this. The Butterfly S is the best Android phone HTC has ever made. We love the curved glass, from side to side which merges into an aluminium looking plastic casing, which is also curved at the back. Glossy finish. That’s how we like it. It feels very solid and often times, people mistakenly thought that it’s got the same body material as the HTC One. With a bigger screen than the One, the Butterfly S did not grow in width. Instead, the phone is longer, giving users the same area of contact for the thumb when operated in one hand.

HTC’s BoomSound is a feature that you wont realize how important it is until you have experienced it. Boomsound is basically the name for the stereo front-facing speakers on both sides of the phone. This is actually the 2nd phone in the market (1st was the One) that gives the user a stereo surround audio experience watching a video or listening to music. One drawback though, it’s not loud enough. We wish HTC can increase the volume in the next iteration of devices.
We think that the curved glass greatly increases the appearance of the display. It somehow acts a ‘magnifier’ that makes everything look sharper & more vibrant. 5 inches is also the right size for a phone. Perfect for one hand operation and other usages like navigation, video playing and games. (Though we prefer bigger screens.. like 5.5″.. but that’s just our preference).
The 4 Ultrapixels camera is good for taking photos during the day. Colours are warm and vibrant. We noticed that the auto exposure works better than a manually picked exposure (tapping on a certain spot in the screen).
For low light shots, it is considered better than many phones, and is very close to what the Nokia Lumia devices can do (though photos on the Lumia are sharper and has less hand shake). We especially like the ‘Retouch’ feature that comes with the camera whereby we can edit things like face contour, skin smoothing, lighting, eye enhancer and more. Check out the photos below. CONCLUSION & BATTERY PERFORMANCE
If you are looking for an Android smartphone with good screen, speakers, camera and looks good, then we would recommend the Butterfly S. We love the curved glass and the speakers especially. Battery life is good. It can last us a full day with regular usage (Whatsapp, Instagram, Camera). The only thing that we particularly don’t like about this phone; the power button. It’s located right at the top, which isnot convenient at all since the phone is quite long. Other than that, the Butterfly S is actually a really good Android phone. Price is about RM2399. A bit pricey in our opinion. That is all. Watch the video below for detailed review.
