Xiaomi Yi car dashcam unboxing & first look [video]

We all know Yi, Xiaomi’s sister company that focuses on producing cameras for day-to-day usage. They started off by making an action camera that mimics the size and look of the GoPro. They then produced a home CCTV camera.

Last year, they announced the car dash camera and despite not being available here in Malaysia, I manage to obtain one from a 3rd party and it actually looks and works as advertised. In fact, it has more features than many other car dashcams in the market currently.

– 165 degrees wide angle lens
– 2.7-inch widescreen with 426 x 240 pixels
– Records full HD videos
– 6-way G-sensor
– ADAS safety features
– Built-in Wi-Fi

The box looks very clean and feels very solid. Everything is in Chinese though, cos this version I have is made for the Chinese market.

The one I have is in champagne colour. It might look big here but its actually very tiny. Like a portion of my palm.

It has built in microphone and speakers. The slot on the right is for attaching the suction cup.

The interface is in chinese but it’s so simple to setup we can actually just ignore the words and look only at the icons.

Inside the box, we also get a USB cable, suction cup and USB-cigarette lighter adapter.

Watch the unboxing and demo of how I set it up inside my car:

Yi also released an app for iOS and Android for users to control and transfer videos from the dashcam.

The app is super easy to use and is always connected to the camera whenever you are in the car. Very convenient.

If you are planning to buy this thing, you can get it from sellers in forum.lowyat.net and the price ranges from RM200-RM300.

So there you go, first look at Yi’s super awesome dashcam. I have been using it in my car for a while now and so far, it has performed really well.
